View Full Version : Come on baby light my fire....
My brother in law collects old and unsual cigarette lighters. Went over to his home the other night for a family 'do' and while poking around I spotted this one....

That brings back memories, I remember having one of those many years ago. :) Nice shot BTW love the semi sepia colour depicting age.

Thats so cool! I wonder if anyone has gone to look through the viewfinder and singed their eyebrows off?

What has it got to do with a cigarette lighter??? It IS a cigarette lighter - just. like. I. said.
Thanks eagle - I thought the colouring helped show age as well.
Scott - someone else has asked me that - I will ask him when I see him next. I kind of thought that it might come out of the lens?
Renae - I must get more of the story behind it - maybe they have! lol

When you press the cable release it releases the spring lid to the right if the cable which strikes the flint and creates the flame for lighting the cigarette. Once you light it you push the spring lid back down and it locks back into place ready to go again. The screw cap to the left of the cable release is the filler where you put lighter fluid. Hope that explains this lighter's functions for you. :)
Thanks eagle - it sure does!
oh, ok, I was just looking at the cable release...what a dumb arse... lol

No problems Jeff.
BTW - I do have one of those 'old fashioned cable releases' for my Pentax ME Super. Cool inventions. My dad used a similar device on his Pracktika many many many years ago - but it was a really long wire with an oval rubber ball that you could either operate by hand or foot. He often used that when he set up our family shots.
Now that is a very unusual lighter! I agree, the toning suits the shot. Are you going to post any more of the collection?

I didn't take any others but should have. Will make that a project I think!
Yes, I think they could make an interesting theme montage with that one as the largest piece.

I love these old nick nacks, this one is extra good, never come across one like it, beautiful.
A bit of C&C if I'm allowed.....the sepia look is a good idea, but this isn't true sepia tonings, it has a stronger yellow cast to it which I think detracts a little from the desired olde worlde sepia effect.
Focus is a bit off and the image could do with some more sharpening and maybe a better contrasting background....all C&C is to be taken with a pinch of salt { smiley face icon, because I cant work out how to apply one properly }

Thanks so much - of course cc is fine!
My focus is centre-weighted and I used my 50mm at 1.4 so the focus is very narrow and on the the middle section of the camera around the digit 5 on the 'lens' - it is clearer in larger size.
I do think you are right about the 'sepia' although I wasn't going for sepia as such but more old, yellowed tones like it was in an old book but I guess that on some monitors it is probably too yellow - I will tone it down a bit. I have also processed this in B & W (with a warm overtone) and it looks great.
Thanks so much for taking the time to look and comment - appreciate it very much!
Cool toy :D
PP works for me here.
