View Full Version : To add or not to add...that is the question.

Just having a go at adding borders and signature to pictures. Opinions welcome.

Karen, I only do borders on the images I am going to post on a forum, the web etc. Obviously when printing to frame, I use the borderless image. I also try to add a watermark (when I remember). Think it adds a personal touch, and the frames do work nicely to frame the shot.
I don't mind what you have done above, but the frame seems a little dark for this shot (which is great BTW). Do I see a faint white line on the inner border? i would possiblyh just thicken that a bit, and maybe lighten your watermark. It's a bit hard to read.
I think you will find it is an "each to their own" type of scenario though.... Look through some peoples posts, and you will see some post with borders, some don't.
I feel "frames" only waste image size although a thin black or white stroke can be effective; after all we are looking at the image not the frame. ;)

Very difficult, or not reliable to give good C&C on such a small image, to be honest I can't even make out what that is at such a small posting size....suggest minimum of 800 pixels on the longest side is apt. I'm not a fan of borders and go along with U Lost 2 post, big thick borders detract attention from the image too much.
From the little I can see of this image, it seems poorly focused...a bit soft and under exposed, almost no shadow detail showing. I think the image could do without the stick that's running diagonally through the image removed, it's another distraction from what is meant to be a simplistic image....sorry to be blunt, but this is the C&C section and this image is pretty uninspiring from what I can see from the small size.

Image I uploaded was 800 x 1200 so I don't know what happens when it reaches here.

Thanks everyone. Interesting to hear other people's opinions.

WHAT?? Of coarse I frame them. BUT HERE we are talking about posting images with a boarder, and that means the photo image has to be smaller to fit into the 1000 px limit. BTW I don't think photos are judged on the boarder/frame around them.
big difference to the photo image size between having a digital board or not; I know what I would rather look at on a forum.

I'd agree with the statement U Lost 2 said....." photos are not judged on the border/frame around them "

Perhaps this was an exercise in presentation, in which case the frame/border is part of the composition and is what is being asked to be considered?

In it's current format considering the border as part of the composition, I'm not sure it works either to be honest. The internal white border as mentioned could be a few more pixels wider. If I were to imagine this image as a printed, framed image to me it would benefit from quite a large matteboard. The image is simplictic in it's composition and to highlight the relative size of the subject a large matteboard would give it the appropriate scale. However others may and will disagree.
BTW. I have heard that points can be lost if digital mats are added to online comp photos as the mat can be a distraction, so it may pay to check the rules before submitting images in a comp. And as I said earlier; the mat makes the actual photo image smaller.
