My brother's wife is expecting their first bub in about 4wks. They just rang saying they are coming up to our Mum's tonight and they want me to do their Maternity photos this afternoon. I'm kinda happy, because I've missed a couple of friends pregnancies because they've gone early..so I'll be happy to get the images. But I am freaking out. I really want to do a good job...but I feel very unprepared. Not even sure where I should take them.

Now I'm off to breathe...lol Any advice?? And does anybody else get themselves all tied up in nervous knots when you are doing a Photo session with people? I get all excited but nervous at the same time. lol

I've not done any pregnancy shots, other than my daughter. Do you know what they want? Why kind of environment, background, atmosphere?

Dont forget your camera.

You need to be inspired too. You are a capable photographer who is doubting themselves. Check out some other pregnancy shots online and put your spin on the situation.

Ahh good luck I'm sure it will all come naturally once you start shooting - can't wait to see some of your shots!

The ones I have seen that look
Good are b&w with a black background. That's as far as my knowledge goes

Good luck!

Thanks Simon and Kathie :) You're right Simon ....I think I was just freaking out cause they took me by surprise. I needed a plan...but I've been searching sites and I am now inspired thinking about how I can put my own style into it etc....picked the location..out at my Mum's. My step dad will be there to watch my little kids ....she has verandahs, timber doors with beautiful chiffon curtains...gardens etc.. I've already got a few images in my head I want to try....my brother is going to be in the shots as well..so I'm excited...I've never taken photos of a guy before. So I've now switched..I can do this and produce awesome emotional stuff. I'm really excited now that I have some poses and a rough plan in my head. :)

Sorry Seventhone and Cookster...didn't see your replies. Mum has neutral walls at her house, so they should be easy enough to change colour pp? I don't have any black backdrops.

I just want to go and do the session now..lol I will let you know how it goes :)

Manda i think you will do fine, because it is family you will also be involved emotionally and i think that will help you produce a great set of pics for them .

Manda .. good advise already given .. l also think you will do fine .. as simon says, "have faith in yourself".
l also think if you show a calm, happy approach and relaxed atmosphere .. they will feel relaxed as well, thus getting these special moments captured on film (or sensor).
Also show them the photos results as you take them, so they can see what your trying to do or capture in the image and they will find it easier to oblige as well :)
l don't know your shooting style, personally speaking l would shoot both RAW & Jpeg, RAW you can edit the heck out of them and if they want some quick jpeg to take with them, you can accommodate that request as well.

Believe in Yourself and your Skills and you will do Well !!!~ :)

I tried to reply in this earlier today but 'internet explorer couldn't display page' and was having an attitude problem at the time:rolleyes2:!

So i am too late now too, but good luck Manda, i'm sure you'll be fine!

I have been trying to do the same with my little sister (by little i mean 19!) for the last few months too, and she now has only 2-3 weeks:blink: before her bub's due, so i best get a wriggle on!

*phew wipes brow* mission completed. Thanks so much everybody for your lovely comments and encouragement. I did some breathing exercises on the drive over there and got straight into it. It really was a lot of fun and I'm fairly confident that my bro and sil are going to like the results. Again I really really appreciate it :) I put a sneak preview in the portrait section.

Kim..my advice quick go get some soon...I missed my hubby's sister last year, because she went two weeks early. I feel so much better knowing that I've got these pics in the bag...so to speak :) lol

Question for you Manda. Did you find that once you got started you put your photographers cap on and it was down to business?

And also...Did you find it easier or harder that it was family? (sometimes I find shooting family harder!! but that could say more about me and my fam than anything else hehe)

I did Simon. I think I suprised my brother and sil a bit, because they haven't seen me get down to business before. They usually only see me change nappies and feed the masses. lol I'm getting quicker as well...photo session all up about an hour. So I was happy with that time.

And also...Did you find it easier or harder that it was family?

I so know what your saying Seventhone (sorry not sure what your name is), I was extra nervous...but that disappeared after a couple of shots. I guess because they know that I'm all self taught and still learning. Where as if it was a stranger I could pretend that I have lots of certificates hanging on my wall at home..and give myself that extra boost of confidence.

Just goes to show the only time that you are nervous is in prep. Once you are down to business and it requires you to think like a photographer it all changes. Its also good to see its not just me it happens to. :)

So do you get nervous in Prep?

I always believe that butterflies are good. I use to perform in a local theatre company and wow the nerves and butterflies are incredible before going on stage...but once I'm on stage boom it's gone and down to business.
