In FF, I have a plugin that allows me to view the EXIF data of any image I view. I just tried this on some images I've submitted - http://www.ausph.com/showthread.php?888-Camp-Coffs-2010-4wd-meet-looking-for-critiques - and the data is a little weird and pretty useless.

I processed these in LR - how do I get the useful data, like camera/lens etc attached to the image? Obviously I've missed something basic here...

You can keep EXIF intact depending on your method of saving the web sized file. In PS if you save for web, its automatically wiped off, instead use the 'Save As' method.
From my short usage of LR i dont think this strips the Exif data, its most probably got to do with your host, flickr; although data can be kept here too...

take a look at either of the above to see where the data has been stripped.

Remember this thread? As part of our Birthday Celebration, today i am Bumping the very first thread posted in each part of the forum.. you could call it a walk down memory lane!!

Sometimes it is worth going back to the start to see where it all began, and even re-igniting treads long gone!

Just to answer the original question for future reference.
There are a couple of things that need to be done.

When you export the images from LR make sure that the "minimise metadata" (I think that's the name, if not it's similar) tick box is NOT selected.

In your Flickr account settings (Your Account/ Privacy and Permissions) make sure that the "Hide your Exif data" selection says "No".
