I discovered NZ cider. Back at that Landing Bar I liked so much they did a real pint (600ml) of Isaac's in a handled glass mug for $5 Kiwi dollars ($4 Aus). What's more it tastes great.

Not sure what to post today. My photos are all dull. That dark Kiwi vegetation often with snow just above it against a bright overcast sky is still defeating me. Anyway here are a couple quick and dirty edits by batch processing the Raw's. Hope I can snag a shot or two I'm happy with when I get home and edit more carefully.

Also I didn't help things blasting away like a poorly trained monkey. I have 400 photos to look at now from 1 day. I'd like to think I'm never that bad unless it's a kid or animal I'm shooting but there's no excuse for shotgun shooting landscapes in my opinion.

It was a long day of being cruised around but worth the price. I'll add the photo's in an hour. Edit photos now added, the lappy's finally finished the batch process and I've now sorted.

I am a big advocate of keeping it simple, and working with one light really gets you to have a think about how you can achieve different looks with a single light source. In the previous thread I showed an example of sidelighting, in this example I have gone with the same softbox but placed directly in front of me, elevated sufficiently so that I could shoot the camera underneath the softbox. I have also in this instance used a bit of polystryrene foam as a fill from underneath, which I am holding just out of frame - this helps soften the shadows under the eyes and neck. Some might think this is shot with an expensive lens, but the 85mm f1.8 can be bought for around $400, it's tack sharp across most of it's aperture range - this was shot at f8 which I find is a bit of a sweet spot for this lens.

Maybe others can post their one light portraits in this thread as a bit of a source guide for people getting started with strobes. What do you think??

I called in and shot the first row from their car park yesterday. Have also tried some landscapes but think they're a bit ho hum.

This technique is very simple to... I watched a video by Joel Grimes today on the FramedNetwork today about cross-lighting. This technique is very simple to setup just one strobe in a softbox, in this case camera right. I used a 60" x 30" softbox in a horizontal orientation and placed pretty much at 90 degrees to me and the rear of the softbox just slightly in front of me and at about shoulder height. What this position does is provide a softer wrap and a smoother transition to shadows because of the feathering effect of the light in front of you, being that it is proportionately less powerful than the light directly beside you (inverse square law). Anyway I recommend watching his video and giving it a go yourself. Just out of interest Joel used this method of lighting for around 20 years of his professional career, goes to show you don't need a gasquillion lights and modifiers to make beautiful images and a successful career.:)

Tip 1, don't stay in the Fairway Lodge Motel Wanaka. Froze my proverbial's off in a poorly insulated room with 2 primitive electric heaters going flat out - and paid $150 for the privilege. Other problems as well but the cold was the deal breaker. Sad part it was recommended by the local i-site tourist advisory.

Tip 2, don't bother buying a camera unless you live in that part of the world. Wow, the scenery.

Day 11 Wanaka to Te Anau

Tip 3 don't assume because you think the road is supposed to turn left that you should turn left. Cost myself an extra 1.5 hr's in the car, which ultimately robbed time from my stops for shooting. Big Oh-Darn moment.

Also very picturesque. Just because the pass is open (which we took) don't assume it's ice free and drive carefully. Stopped for a snowball fight with the kids. Don't know what the locals driving past thought :)

On to the pics as I need to hit the sack early to make the most of tomorrows expensive cruise round Doubtful Sound tomorrow.
