  • Lightning across the bay

Nothing special happening and it was a long way off so used the 70-200 at full stretch.

Just checked out the Exif - some good clues in there for me. Thanks.

No worries Terry. Basically, the further away the lightning the wider the aperture. Almost full moon last night so plenty of ambient light to contend with.

I don't have a hood for that lens so shielded the front with a handheld hat and placed a rag over the viewfinder during exposure. Hope that helps.

Cheers Alan. It's nice to use a long lens and be safely out of range.

You're getting to be a gun at this photography stuff Mick. It's always a buzz to get some great lightning shots. You have inspired me to change my avatar.
There was a big storm at Newman on 27th October and a local guy pieced together about 15 shots for this photographic image.

Wow! That's a pretty wild image Isac, thanks for sharing.

I've had disappointing results the last few years with lightning shots as the storms tend to dissipate as they approach the coast. Last year I travelled about 40km out of town on at least two dozen occasions for a net result of one half decent result. This year I'm determined to chase hard and get some good results.

This one from a few years ago is the kind of image I'm after. Just a single frame capture from yet another storm that petered out as it got close but I got lucky. An hour of getting nothing...then bam!

Well worth the hardship of getting an image like that. The clouds and colours are terrific and it would look good framed and on the wall! If you're going to get photos like that, then keep chasing. Your settings were pretty spot on for a nice sharp image.
