iTunes /iPhone on new Computer, Anybody Got any Tips??

When my laptop died it took with it my itunes packed with my phone apps data etc.
I have downloaded a new itunes but i have read that plugging my phone in will sync it with the
itunes which is empty, in other words it will delete everything.

I have a backup of my phone, but not the old itunes. I have since downloaded my purchased apps so that itunes isn't empy.
There is plenty of info out there regarding this, but has anybody here actually done it and if so how did it go??

Can't you just tell iTunes not to Auto Sync?

It's in Preferences under devices - or am i missing something obvious?

yes i have done that but itunes won't recognize the phone as it thinks it is on another computer???
Love my iphone but i hate the way Apple ties you to it's programs.

Not sure exactly what you are after but this software will help get data off your iPhone.

After you have the data off, if you have disabled auto sync as Alan suggested then you can rt click (Win) or ctrl click (MAC) to select backup from the menu to create a new backup of your iPhone.

Ive had 3 iPods, 2 iPhones, at least 7 major releases of iTunes plus all the minor point upgrades and two or three desktop PCs anD have never lost anything but I have no idea how I did it.

Actually i have found links galore on the iphone support forum, and i also downloaded the apps Shane suggested. The mistake i made was that i only backed up the iphone but not the itunes as i stupidly thought i could just download a fresh itunes and everything would be ok, but not so, if i plugged my phone into an empty itunes and let it sync it would wipe it, so as always i learn by my mistakes and have to go the long way round and transfer my gear to itunes as well as download my paid apps again.

If your iPhone is a 4 or 4s you could try using iCloud to back the phone up to then sync iTunes with iCloud. I think that might work.

It would if i had a decent internet service, out in the bush its too slow for icloud unfortunately ..

Julie, I'm not the most clever in tech stuff, but I had a backed up copy of my itunes library on an external hard drive and successfully copied it all to my new computer, I was wondering if you could copy the iphone files to your computer, then go and direct the itunes to sync that, check that they are there, then sync your iphone?

Thanks for the info all, if ever anybody finds themselves in this same position where the pc dies before you get opportunity to back up itunes or you are on new pc with no itunes installed THIS method works flawlessly , i didn't have a hitch, big thanks to the original poster.
