  • Rufous Nankeen Night Heron.

I get a bit excited when I see a rare bird in our neighbourhood. This one is a Rufous Nankeen Night Heron. They are native to Australia and rarely seen here in the West.
They are about 1/2 metre tall with very unusual and striking colours. During the the breeding season, there are usually two or three thin white plumes from the crown, so hopefully we will see some babies soon. There is a pair that have been here for several days, so here's hoping.

Nice to get something different. Looks like it hasn't quite made up its mind what sort of bird it wants to be. Good you have a nice image of it though.

Thanks Hans. It was a special moment to see it close up. It stayed motionless for ages so easy to photograph.

Wonderful to see one Isac and even better to get close shots. The last three are great with good poses, colour and sharpness. #2 is spectacular.

Pleased as punch with these ones Alan. With #2, it was 2 metres away and after I took the shot it flew off but perched on a tree trunk only about 4 metres away and then just perched there while a clicked away.
