Very good image Hans. The clarity and shapes are excellent. When you tease us with your newfound skills, you should post the original so we can see how far you have come on your journey of skills development. You could probably give us a tutorial on the workflow of how and why, so we can see how you got to this wonderful result.

Great image Hans. Looks very similar to Zabriskie Point in Death Valley.

Very close That being the valley in the background and the sulphur colours in the foreground.

Very nice Hans. I like the contrast of the yellows and browns in the foreground with the bluish tones in the distance. Can you tell us what the new skills are.

The raw original picture. quite lifeless with the dull lighting.

Tweaked in Raw Notice the difference in the histogram as we increase the dynamic range. The picture is brighter but there has been no loss at either end of the whites or blacks

The final picture would have had a small amount of image applied with overlay blending and sharpened in Lab mode the lightness channel which think it was about .7 pixels at 500% Threshold about 10.
I think the overlay blending needs to be done with a bit of caution as it can quickly get to much contrast. The trick is to find the best blending mode and how much opacity you allow.

I am happy to redo these steps as well as I remember them in the same way as I did the two above if anyone is interested.

Yeah Hans, I like the way you have enriched the image with those settings. Good enough to frame now and hang it on the wall!

We don't stop learning Hans, you should know that. I keep hundreds of tips in well organised text files including links to youtube etc and its easy to refresh the memory by searching for the thing you want. I've been using Photoshop since the first release and I'm learning daily on new things to try.

Continued as requested by Tod. Please comment on whether you agree with mods or have additional comments on this workflow in CS6.

After loading the picture into CS6 I changed the mode to Lab and then applied the image. A good time to have a look here as to what happens if you change blending modes. In this case I liked the overlay but thought it took things a bit far.

I reduced the opacity to 50% . I did like the extra bit of darkness in the back ground so I darkened that part of the curve a little.

When I went to sharpen the picture I noticed that the distant mountains had a lot of noise so I cancelled the sharpening and just ran the noise filter once. You can run it multiple times but I didn't think it was warranted

I settled for the above level of sharpening which is quite noticeable. The fact that the sharpening is performed on the "B&W" channel allows for a greater amount of sharpening before it becomes a bother. After sharpening back to Image and Mode to change back to RBG and allow the flattening which means you don't have to do that step yourself.

Saved for AUSPH forum as a 137kb file the quality is not bad according to me.
This is my present take on this image. Lets have your thoughts!

Good work Hans and I like that you are really giving this editing thing some serious workout! Is it possible to get a copy of the original image? Maybe Dropbox?

I had a play in RAW and to me it only needs a bit of a boost to give it more contrast. It's a beautiful photo and I only changed the "basics" and "details".
