Had to get up before the sun for a medical appointment. Took the camera just in case.

You'd be happy to stop for an image like that Hans - well done. Shame these types of shots get a blown out sun, but not much you can do to stop that.

Contrasts way too much for the camera. Could use a tripod and hdr maybe?

Probably don't need a tripod so bracketing would give you more flexibility ... OR ... easy quick fix using luminosity masks, they're very powerful.

Raw images are usually a bit flat but ACR can really give them a boost. Perhaps just dropping the exposure may have given you a better starting point.
