      No idea with the fly ID, but I do like the colours and patterns on the caterpillar.
      Agree about the detail and sharpness on both, have you bought a new lens?

        Yes bought the Sigma 105mm macro Gaz. Great lens and not just for macro - used it for some rodeo shots recently also.

      The Hoverfly's that I have seen
      down here have a solid colour on their 'shoulders' .... but otherwise looks similar.

      That is one freaky caterpillar ......... very nice shots Gabby

        Not sure about the fly ID but #2 is the caterpillar of the Common Crow butterfly

        What an interesting pair.
        That could be a footballer hoverfly, not the typical ones most of us see.
        That's one wild caterpillar! Not seen one like that before.

          Thanks everyone. The caterpillar was on the gate and impossible to get a good shot of him so I pushed him onto the leaf then returned him to the garden.
