  • Must be a bit bored

I remember doing something similar years back but not long hand like this. I decided that after not doing any coding or computer programming for 40 years to look at Python coding. I saw the coding for dummies book in the library and took it home. I am a firm believer in biting off more than you can chew and then chew like crazy. So before I finished the introduction in dummiesI thought it would be nice to have a look into the exif data. Only 3 days later I have a Excel scattergram from the csv data read in from the 2025 jpg file. frequency verses focal length.

I have used two lenses 24-105 and 100-500. Obviously the 24-105 is the more commonly used and shows I would have use a wider or narrower lens on some occasions and similarly for the 100-500 lens. The only thing that surprises me is the large number of times I would have used a wider angle and obviously an 18 to 150 would be extremely fine for my photography.

Now to try and keep sufficient interest in coding to see if I can do something a bit more useful.

Nice bit of learning. My graph would pretty much be a flat line at 600mm with the occasional landscape focal lengths.

Wonder why they stopped making the 18-400 lens that Isac uses with such great success. An obvious choice for 90% of serious touristing shooters.

They stopped because of the stand over tactics employed by Canon when they got a court order to stop 3rd party manufacturing of lenses that fitted Canon cameras. A lot of the lenses that were made by others were filling a void for the lenses that Canon were not interested in producing.

I do agree it's a one size fits all when you only want to cart around one lens. I rarely use my other lenses now, just the 18-400.

I see they must be relaxing that a bit these days. Also they only made the 18-400 for the C format.

        Manufacturer Notes
Meike Known for budget primes; some clever workarounds to bypass RF restrictions
Viltrox Offers manual RF lenses; AF versions were previously blocked by Canon
Laowa (Venus Optics) Excellent macro and specialty lenses
TTArtisan / 7Artisans Affordable manual primes
Samyang/Rokinon Limited RF options, mostly manual
These are great if you’re okay with manual focus or niche optics.

???? Using EF Lenses on EOS R (The Most Reliable Third‑Party Option)
Because Canon’s EF‑to‑RF adapters work extremely well, many photographers rely on EF‑mount third‑party lenses instead. This opens the door to:

        Sigma (Art, Contemporary, Sports series)

        Tamron

        Tokina

        Samyang AF

Meike EF lenses (including their new 85mm f/1.8 II, which cleverly bypasses RF restrictions)

Canon’s own EF‑to‑RF adapters maintain full autofocus and electronic communication, though some third‑party EF lenses may show quirks like AF hunting depending on the model.

Golly - news to me ... wotta bugga for those who (like many of us) like a one-size-fits-all daily usage

Well done Hans. I've though about trying Python but really don't have any pressing need to motivate me. The other interesting exercise would be to r=write a phone app.

I'm using Nikon's 500mm PF DSLR lens on the Z8 mirrorless with Nikon's adaptor. It works very well. There are probably plenty of excellent used DSLR lenses available at bargain prices.

Only doing the coding as a hobby which may be useful at some time. Don't know how long I will retain interest Yes the earlier EF lenses will fit to the new Canon R cameras with an adapter I have a 70-200 i use rarely these days.
